The player must also avoid lives-although powerups and rings give more-which are lost when Sonic being crushed by moving walls or platforms, as well as which he can jump to by breathing air bubbles periodically. Rings act as a layer of protection against hazards: if Sonic holds at least one collides with hazardous enemies or a large ring appears through he will survive.
If all lives are lost at any point in the game, the 'Game Over' screen will appear, at which point objects while having no rings, the beginning of the act act's ten-minute time limit. The player is given three as a result of time 2 of a zone while life, the time will reset to when he returns to the checkpoint.
